Neighborhoods

We need strong neighborhoods with enjoyable parks, drivable streets, affordable, safe housing, and economic development throughout the city. Towards this end, we’ve invested in recreation areas across the city, from Beacon Park and Town Square on the southside to Rotary Park downtown. We put general fund money for the first time in years towards our roads and, while there is work to be done, I’m proud to boast a 48 hour pothole turnaround time. Further, we’ve made the city of Lansing more accessible to all, establishing hundreds of new housing units at all income levels throughout the city while bringing subsidized housing up to code. Families, seniors, and professionals alike can enjoy healthy foods at the new downtown Capital City Market, and we can now welcome visitors to the Courtyard by Marriott - our first new hotel downtown in 30 years.

Moving forward, we will utilize all options to attract and retain those looking for an exciting, diverse community to visit or call home. That will involve placemaking efforts, like creating safe, walkable neighborhoods and ensuring properties are up to code to ensure safety for homeowners and renters. It will also include grants to neighborhoods to continue the great work that each does to showcase their particular parts of our city. Neighborhood leaders have been particularly creative, and I have been proud to work with them to show off our great neighborhoods.
